Kenyan court upholds ban on avocado farming next to Amboseli National Park

The Kajiado Environment and Lands Court (ELC) dismissed a review application by KiliAvo Fresh Limited, which sought to overturn the revocation of its license to cultivate vegetables, including avocados, in the Kimana area of Amboseli.

This decision followed the initial revocation by the Kenya National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), citing the farm's location in a wildlife corridor and its inconsistency with local land use and ecosystem management plans. KiliAvo Fresh Limited had appealed against NEMA and Big Life Limited at the National Environment Tribunal (NET), which dismissed their case in April 2021.

The firm then sought a review from the Kajiado ELC, which declared it lacked jurisdiction over NET's decision. The controversy surrounding the KiliAvo farm stems from its potential impact on water resources, wildlife migration, and local livelihoods amidst climate change challenges. Despite this ruling, concerns remain about other commercial farms like Ngong Vegetable Limited, which allegedly expanded beyond its permitted area without the necessary approvals.
