Vietnam achieved a significant milestone in the durian export sector, with revenues reaching US$253 million from nearly 57,000 tons of durian in the first quarter, marking a 42% increase in volume and a 63.7% rise in value compared to the same period last year. This performance solidifies durian's position as the leading fruit in terms of export turnover, contributing 17% to the total value of the fruit and vegetable industry.
The export composition predominantly consists of fresh and frozen durian, contributing more than 90% and 8.5% to the total export turnover, respectively. Other durian-based products like dried durian, durian juice, and durian ice cream occupy a minor share. Notably, the average export price for durian experienced a 15.2% surge, reaching US$4,437 per ton.
China remains the primary market for Vietnamese durian, importing 51,500 tons valued at over US$228 million, which is a 57.5% increase in volume and a 71% rise in value year-on-year. Thailand follows as the second-largest importer, with an export turnover of US$18 million, nearly doubling from the previous year and accounting for 7% of the total market share. Additionally, remarkable growth has been observed in several other markets including Japan, the Republic of Korea, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
