Spain continues to lead watermelon sales in the EU, but competition is growing

According to data from a report by Hortoinfo based on Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat) statistics, in 2023, Spain continued to lead watermelon sales within the European Union, despite experiencing a 17.17% decrease in the volume sold in the last five years. Meanwhile, Morocco, which ranks third in this market, has increased its sales by 49.51%.

In 2023, the EU acquired 1,807.77 million kilos of watermelon, i.e. 4.74% more than in 2019. These purchases amounted to a record 1,262.56 million euros and an average price of 0.70 euros per kilo.

By country, Spain sold 564.59 million kilos of watermelons (117.01 million kilos less than in 2019) accounting for 31.23% of all sales in the EU in 2023. Italy ranked second with 240.54 million kilos, i.e. 36.87 million kilos more than in 2019. Morocco followed with 222.83 million kilos, a remarkable 73.79 million kilos more than five years ago. Greece ranked fourth with 123.01 million kilos but a decrease of 12.34 million kilos since 2019.

Spain was also the leading supplier of watermelons in revenue in Europe with sales worth 426.26 million euros in 2023, i.e. 68.65 million euros more than in 2019, thanks to an average selling price of 0.75 euros per kilo. Morocco ranked second in revenue with 156.74 million euros, thanks to an increase in volume and an average price of 0.70 euros per kilo. Italy ranked third with 136.43 million euros and the Netherlands fourth with 101.12 million euros thanks to the increase in the value of their sales compared to 2019.
