In a strategic shift towards sustainability, AEON has transitioned to sourcing bananas from Vietnam for its 91 outlets in Hong Kong, replacing previously stocked Philippine and Taiwanese varieties. This decision, as articulated by Yuichiro Shiotani, CEO of AEON Topvalu Vietnam, is grounded in the high-quality cultivation practices of Vietnamese bananas, which align with AEON's sustainability benchmarks. The move underscores a broader trend where environmental considerations and efficient logistics are becoming paramount for retailers. AEON is also set to exclusively source Vietnamese mangoes, moving away from Thai and Philippine sources.
Similarly, Mirash Basheer, CEO of May Exports Vietnam, highlighted a growing preference for Vietnamese products that adhere to eco-friendly production standards among global retailers. The division plans to expand its procurement of Vietnamese agricultural products, including cashews and various beverages. Meanwhile, Walmart's engagement with approximately 500 suppliers in Vietnam, predominantly foreign-owned entities, suggests a potential for increased Vietnamese exports to the U.S. market, contingent upon meeting sustainability prerequisites. Trade consultant Do Ngoc Hung emphasized the importance for Vietnamese firms to align with the green product mandates of major U.S. distributors to enhance their market penetration.
