An official from the Department of Agriculture (DA) has confirmed a decline in the farmgate price of onion in Oriental Mindoro, attributing it to an oversupply. Arnel de Mesa, a DA spokesperson, reported that the price plummeted to P25 to P33 per kilo from the previous P45 to P55. The oversupply is linked to a 40% increase in onion production areas, not just in Mindoro but also in Central and Northern Luzon.
To assist, the DA's regional offices are facilitating connections between farmers and the Food Terminal Inc. for storage solutions. Additionally, a cold storage facility was recently inaugurated in Bulalacao town. The agriculture sector in the province has suffered P770 million in damages due to El Niño, as per DA's monitoring. Current retail prices for local onions range from P60 to P120 per kilo, while imported ones are between P80 and P100.
