In the Lapseki district of Çanakkale, Turkey, which is recognized for its significant contribution to the country's fruit production, the orchards have entered a phase of blooming, similar to the Japanese Sakura, indicating a potentially successful harvest season.
Ali Kaçan, the district's director of Agriculture and Forestry, reported that with the onset of spring, cherry, peach, nectarine, and apricot trees have blossomed. The district, spanning 35,000-40,000 hectares, is a leading producer of peaches and nectarines in Turkey, with an annual output of 110,000-120,000 tons.
Lapseki's peaches have been granted geographical indication status, distinguishing them based on their unique ecosystem and soil structure. Approximately 2,000 registered, and an estimated 1,000 unregistered producers operate in Lapseki, making it a vital hub for fruit production. The local market, especially in Istanbul, eagerly awaits Lapseki's fruit, and there is a strong push towards exporting these products internationally.
With favorable weather conditions, the district anticipates a production increase to 120,000-130,000 tons this year. A local fruit producer highlighted the advantageous weather conditions, including the absence of frost, which is expected to contribute to a productive year. The focus is also on expanding exports to ensure profitability for all farmers involved.
