Tomato prices in Ukraine have noticeably dropped this week, according to analysts at the EastFruit project. Market participants attribute this to a seasonal increase in supply from local greenhouses, while demand for the product has significantly decreased.
Representatives of Ukrainian greenhouse complexes also noted a complete lack of demand for their produce, while the supply of tomatoes from local farms has increased significantly. In these circumstances, producers were forced to reconsider prices downwards. Currently, the main sales of local tomatoes range from 90-120 UAH/kg ($2.28-3.04/kg), on average 20% cheaper than at the end of the previous working week.
Imported tomatoes from Turkey were also present in the Ukrainian market. The supply of imported produce remained limited, but due to declining demand, sellers had to make concessions to buyers and also reduce prices for Turkish tomatoes. By the end of the working week, imported tomatoes were offered for sale from 75 UAH/kg ($1.90/kg), on average 16% cheaper than the previous week.
It is worth noting that currently, local tomatoes in Ukraine are still on average 34% more expensive than at the end of April 2023. However, most market operators believe that the downward price trend in this segment will prevail in the market next week.
