The State of Mexico is one of the country's most important mushroom production centers, contributing significantly to the national supply and creating employment opportunities in the region. According to information provided by the Government of the State of Mexico, this region produces 5,000 tons of mushrooms a year.
Recently, the entity has increased its mushroom production, reaching record figures. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the leading producers are the municipalities of Atlacomulco, Valle de Bravo, and Zitácuaro.
The most cultivated varieties are white, oyster, and button mushrooms, which together account for more than 80% of the state's mushroom production. Diana Hernández, a leading producer in the region between Ixtlahuaca and Jocotitlan, highlighted the mushrooms' nutritional, cultural, and identity value for the Region and the country. She also stressed their contribution to the preservation of the environment. The organic cultivation process generates residues that serve as organic fertilizer, benefiting other crops and the soil.
