The potato season in Malta is going well this year for Altena Potatoes in Veen. "Prices remain at a high level. As a result, turnover is slightly lower than other years, but thanks to the high prices, we are satisfied with the result," says Kees Schouten. "So far, we have had the Santé variety, but they are running out quite early. We will start with the Alpha's next week."
The planting in Malta was about 20% lower this year. The reason for this is the enormous demand for agricultural land for the construction of apartments. "Yet, we have already received about twenty trucks. With the nice weather we are having now, I am hopeful that sales will pick up a bit more," the potato wholesaler continues. He mainly sells the Malta's to the market and wholesale trade, and supermarkets are now also getting involved.
"The supply of imported potatoes on the market is sparse at the moment. Due to the war, goods from Israel are only trickling in. Egypt has been affected by brown rot and Morocco is sending almost all its trade to Russia. Everyone is waiting for the arrivals from Spain. They are coming in at high prices, but are not yet fully skin-set. Also, the export of Agria's to Spain is still going quite well, despite the high prices. "
