The Spanish authorities have alerted about a consignment of peppers from Morocco, suspecting it contains higher-than-allowed levels of a dangerous insecticide, not authorized in the European Union. The substance, chlorpyrifos, was identified during a routine border inspection. The European Union's Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has indicated a potential health risk with the peppers.
Further analysis revealed chlorpyrifos presence at 0.21 ± 0.105 mg/kg - ppm, significantly exceeding the EU's maximum residue limit of 0.010 mg/kg – ppm. This incident is not isolated, with previous instances of Moroccan peppers exceeding pesticide limits in Europe.
