But Nashik farmers call this a political move

Indian government lifts onion export ban to facilitate exports from Gujarat

In a recent development, the Indian government has announced a partial lift on the previously indefinite ban on onion exports, allowing for the export of 2,000 tons of white onions with immediate effect. This decision, disclosed on 25 March 2024, aims to facilitate exports from Gujarat, a predominant white onion producing region. The directive specifies that exports will proceed through three designated ports in Gujarat and Mumbai, under the condition that each shipment receives certification from the Horticulture Commissioner of Gujarat. This measure is intended to ensure that the exported onions meet the required quality and quantity standards.

However, the government's decision has led to dissent among onion farmers in Nashik and adjacent areas, who view this as a politically motivated action during the Lok Sabha elections. They argue that this move unfairly favors Gujarat over other states, particularly affecting those involved in the cultivation of red onions, such as in Maharashtra. This has led to expressions of frustration among farmers who feel sidelined by the policy.
