Switzerland: Decline in vegetable production and imports

Carrots continue to be the most popular among consumers

Carrots remain Switzerland's most popular vegetable, with Swiss men and women consuming nearly seven kilos per person last year. Tomatoes come in second place. However, if cherry tomatoes were included, they would knock carrots off the top spot. The per capita consumption of fresh and stored vegetables by the Swiss was 80 kilograms last year.

In 2023, Switzerland cultivated fresh and stored vegetables on 14,268 hectares – 123 hectares less than the previous year. The fresh vegetable quantities also fell to 272,106 tonnes, about 31,000 tonnes less than the year before, thus slightly below the average of the last five years. On the other hand, the quantities of stored vegetables were at 81,525 tonnes, over 24,000 tonnes higher than the previous year. Overall, the domestic supply quantities amounted to 353,631 tonnes, 6,666 tonnes less than in 2022.

In addition to domestic production, the import quantities of fresh and stored vegetables also slightly decreased by 3,760 tonnes to 352,280 tonnes.
