Last week, a semi-truck transporting 40,000 pounds of celery ignited on Interstate 80, leading to significant traffic disruptions. The fire originated in the semi's trailer, which was completely ablaze upon the arrival of emergency services. The incident necessitated the closure of I-80's westbound lanes from 1:30 AM to approximately 5:30 AM, while fire crews worked to extinguish the fire.
The Joliet Fire Department, supported by multiple units, managed to prevent further damage or injuries. The fire, occurring between the Briggs and Hollywood exits, is currently under investigation. Although traffic resumed early in the morning, cleanup efforts persisted throughout the day.
