In Bangladesh, the arrival of litchi in the local markets marks the start of the Jyestha month. This year, however, the cost of litchi is on the higher side. The increase in price is attributed to a significant drop in production, which traders link to the intense summer heat affecting yield. Despite an increase in cultivation area to 530 hectares in Rajshahi, the expected production is around 3,800 tonnes.
The adverse weather conditions, including rain and severe heatwaves, have led to a considerable loss of litchi buds, impacting the overall production. Early varieties of litchi are currently being harvested and sold, albeit at higher prices due to reduced yields and increased labor costs. Varieties such as Bombay, Madraji, and others will soon enter the market, potentially adjusting prices. Despite the challenges, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and local traders remain optimistic about meeting market demand during the peak season.
