Regular oranges are only shipped to other countries

Peru: Marzala exports 100% of its juicing oranges to Europe

At this time of the year (May to October), juicing orange prices in Peru are quite affordable compared to other fruits, as consumption is very low; due to this, and to the relaxation of import tariffs in Europe until early October, this is a good time for South America to export.

This is the case of Marzala, a Peruvian fruit producer and exporter, which during this time exports 100% of its juicing oranges to Europe. According to Álvaro Combina Crespo, general manager of the firm, "the shipments we make to other countries are of oranges for fresh consumption and/or industrial processing, working every year with the same clients and striving to become more competitive for them."

The company's main product are Valencia juicing oranges for processing, very similar to Caribbean juicing oranges. "We have the only citrus plantation in the Peruvian Amazon certified with GlobalGAP and our exports increase every year, from the 60 containers with which we started four years ago to the 200 we are shipping nowadays," affirms Álvaro.

"We also export our oranges for fresh consumption in cardboard boxes under our brand "La Morochita", which is a product of excellent quality, widely recognised in the domestic market and growing towards achieving this also internationally," stated Álvaro.

The firm also offers mandarins, Minneolas and melons for fresh consumption; fruits of which it is the largest local distributor and whose prices can even triple at the start of the Peruvian summer. According to Marzala's manager, the company covers 35% of the demand from Peru's supermarkets and also makes shipments to Colombia, Ecuador and a few Caribbean Islands, where it has strategic alliances with local supermarket suppliers.

"We differentiate juicing oranges grown in the Peruvian Amazon from the rest of varieties, such as the Navelate or the Washington Navel, which we call table oranges and which are produced in the more deserted areas. For now, we only sell the latter in Peru, but we have received requests and are considering expanding this line in the coming years," concludes Álvaro Combina Cresto.
