"Trade in dried fruits and nuts has become a year round business"

Trade in dried fruits and nuts is a year round business. According to director Toon van Noort from Tovano, Maasdijk. "Before when I was a young man we had a lot of work from September until December and then in January and February could begin our hibernation. Those days are gone. We have plenty of work the whole year round now, thankfully with the peak still from September until December."

"The health benefits of nuts are increasingly popular and we can respond to that. People don't want a "case of dates" any more, but we import Medjool-dates with stones, no mater what they cost. And for the lazy woman we also have stone less dates available. The supply from Tunisia and Algeria is less this year but from the other areas there is plenty of product available", Says Toon.

"We also have a year round supply of figs from Turkey. We have a good demand for the whole year. Brazil nuts, pecans, almonds, peeled walnuts and hazel nuts are also in demand while the prices are stable at a high level. In addition we also have available jumbo Diamond USA walnuts from the ongoing harvest, but the end is in sight and one has to wait until November for the new harvest", continues the nuts trader.

Tovano has also been shipping the so called 'super-foods range', for the last few months. Chia-seed, hemp-seed, mulberry berries, goji berries are all in good demand. "What ever they say I do not believe that I will live to be 105, but they are certainly not bad for you. They are also delicious mixed, but not with a herring sandwich with onion", laughs Toon.
