Mexico: Lemon prices down 25% the first half of April

After an increase of around 243% during the first three months of the year, lemon prices have finally dropped by 25.34% during the first half of April, according to data provided by the National Statistics and Geography Institute of Mexico.

Both producers and authorities had expected citrus prices to stabilise in April, given the increase in production volumes, which had been affected by intense rains in late 2013 as well as by a pest known as Yellow Dragon.

In the period between 16 and 22 April, lemons with seeds reached an average of 19.66 pesos per kilo in Mexico City, while the seedless variety reached 40.35 pesos, according to data from the Federal Attorney's Office of the Consumer (PROFECO).
