Italy: After Signora Melanzana, here comes Pomito

This year, Sicilian company Ortonatura introduced Pomito, oval tomatoes that can meet customer demands both in terms of flavour and price.

"We cultivate the Naram variety. The fruit is oval, weighs between 110-130 grams, has a uniform colour and a long shelf-life. The plant is vigorous and bunches are very robust. These tomatoes are excellent for sauces or salads," explains Nuccia Alboni.

"We use the same integrated cultivation techniques we use for aubergines, so the produce is genuine."

At the moment, 4 ha have been destined to the protected cultivation of tomatoes, whereas there are 20 for aubergines, 8 of which are soil-less.

90% of the produce is sold to the wholesale market, whereas the rest goes to retailers. 80% of the produce is sold in Italy, the rest goes abroad to Japan, Arab Emirates, Germany, France, Netherlands and Switzerland.

According to Nuccia, while the European market prefers uniform produce with international certifications but is only willing to pay higher prices for a short period of time, extra-European markets want the same quality but with prices similar to the Italian ones.

"We are mainly affected by Spain because of its lower production costs. The price trend is excellent for tomatoes, whereas that of aubergines dropped from the beginning of 2014 because there have been bigger volumes available, especially since many farmers started cultivating aubergines after the excellent 2013 campaign."

"Our aubergines managed well anyway thanks to our clients, who recognise their high quality. We increased the produce sold as demand grew thanks to produce from third party producers selected by us."

Nuccia publishes a recipe on Facebook every day, which is read on average by 1,000-2,000 people. Many even send their own suggestions.

Other news: Signora Melanzana goes for a bike ride
Starting this year, Signora Melanzana sponsors the ASD Ciclosport team, which takes part in the regional championship and various cycling events all over Italy.

"The team is made up of athletes that have already won important events. We want to promote the relationship between sport and food as well as health and a proper diet."

Signora Melanzana also takes part in the events organised by the Insieme per il diabete (Together for diabetes) association.
