Mexico: Tomato prices continue to drop
Manuel Antonio Cazares Castro, president of the Tomato Product System, said that tomato prices in the domestic market were still down and hadn't rebound, a situation that was affecting producers, especially those who do not meet the standards to export, as that market has slightly better prices. He also stated that the prices of the salad tomato in the domestic market ranged between 2.50 and 3.00 pesos per kilo .
Prices are expected to improve a little throughout this week or in the next one, as Sinaloa's harvest is coming out and Baja California doesn't have as much production as Sonora, which would lead to a significant rebound in the kilogram's prices.
"In general, the cycle has been very unusual for all tomato growers in the country throughout this agricultural year. They are struggling a lot, given the low prices of the crop," he said.
This year's tomato production area in Sonora is of 1,500 hectares.
