Amidei (Alegra)

Italy: Nice cherries but lower prices

"The produce is very good and is doing well on the domestic market although quotations are not in line with previous years," explains Gianni Amidei (in the photo), CEO of Alegra, as regards the cherry campaign. Prices are in fact 20% lower than 2013.

"The next 7-10 days will be the crucial ones due to the peaks in production of the Sweet, Lapins and Ferovia varieties. There are still 25 days to go, and we hope that the increased temperatures will push consumption."

News is not very good with regards to exports. "Unfortunately, we cannot increase our exports because of the Drosophila suzukii, the fruit fly. Residue levels of the defence treatments are higher than what's accepted by various German chains, so we cannot deal with these more demanding markets."
