Mozambique targets 14.7m tonnes of cassava

Mozambique is targeting 14.7 million tonnes of cassava this year, an increase of five million tonnes on average for the last five years, state media reported Tuesday. Quoting the Ministry of Agriculture, state-run daily Noticias said cassava production was mainly focused on the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambézia and Inhambane and carried out in the family-base agricultural sector.

Cassava is the second most important crop in Mozambique and is one of the main sources of food for the country’s population, particularly in rural areas that are home to over 80 percent of the more than 23 million inhabitants.

“Cassava production is mainly focused on the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambézia and Inhambane, and carried out in the family-base agricultural sector,” the ministry said.
