Peru: Record avocado production saturated the markets in 2014

This year, Peru has exported 164,000 tonnes of avocado; an increase of 56% compared to last season.

In Peru, according to ProHass, there are 24,000 hectares planted exclusively with Hass avocado, with a production per hectare of about 13 tonnes. Many of these fields are young, and thus production volumes in the future will considerably increase.

"Here in Peru almost nobody is planting Hass avocado, because our supply is growing faster than demand and this can only cause a drop in prices," explains Arturo Medina Castro, president of ProHass.

James Bosworth, Ricardo Romero and Arturo Medina Castro at the recent PMA FRESH SUMMIT 2014.

"There is a lot of fruit, and problems have started to arise; we are oversupplying the European and U.S. markets," he affirms, adding that "in 2014 there have been times with very low prices, but also others when they were quite good, so on average the campaign has been fair."

We will enter the Chilean market late this year; hopefully, next year we will do so early in the campaign. In 2014, only 1.20% of our production was shipped there.

ProHass is also preparing to work hard next season, as they estimate that production volumes could grow by 40%.

"We expect to enter the Chinese, Japanese and Korean markets, which represent a very important window for us; we are also promoting the fruit in international markets and launching a strategy to increase consumption in the domestic market," states Arturo.

World Avocado Congress 2015
As part of the tasks of dissemination, promotion and support of the avocado industry, ProHass is organising the WORLD AVOCADO CONGRESS 2015.

"We are working very hard in the organisation of this congress, which will be held from 13 to 18 September 2015, and we have come together with great technicians and specialists in the field. We will have a showroom and a pre-congress so that visitors can visit the fields," he concludes.
