Greece: Free food for 5,000 people prepared with ugly vegetables
Free meals for 5,000 people will be prepared using fresh produce that did not reach the market. The event will take place on Sunday, 9 November, from 11 am to 4 pm at the White Tower of Thessaloniki.
The meal will be prepared by the Association of Chefs of Thessaloniki. The fresh vegetables and fruits used had been discarded either because they were in surplus, or because they had a bad appearance, such as crooked carrots, aubergines and potatoes.
Any unused amount of food will go to charities for people in need.
Approximately about a tonne of fruit and vegetables are expected to be used; hundreds of kilos of "bad" vegetables will be collected from growers near Thessaloniki, with over 150 volunteers taking part in preparing the meal.
According to research, it is estimated that over one third of the world's food production is wasted. Every household in Greece wastes around 98.9 kilos of food per person annually, 30% of which could be prevented with small changes in our daily eating habits.
"The event will send a resounding message to citizens, businesses and public institutions about the fact that wasting food, especially at a time when a large portion of our fellow citizens suffer lack of food security, is unacceptable," says Niki Charalabopoulou, director of the organisation Feedback.
Feedback has organised a series of similar events and launched campaigns in cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Oakland, Nairobi and Warsaw. The event in Thessaloniki is also part of the EU FUSIONS, a four-year programme for food waste in Europe.
