Greece to strengthen controls on fruit and vegetable exports

The Greek Minister of Rural Development, George Karasmanis, has ordered a strengthening in the controls of the country's fresh fruit and vegetable shipments destined for Bulgaria and Romania, with a special emphasis on citrus.

Checks made at the start of the export season should deal promptly and effectively with any irregularities in the distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The services of the Ministry of Rural Development will verify:

- If exporters use inappropriate packaging.

- If they have the necessary documentation.

- If they have announced the cargo's shipment to business operators, the control authorities, etc.

"Fresh fruits and vegetables are our country's main products for export, both in the EU and in third countries. We will not allow Greek products meeting exceptional quality standards to be discredited and to suffer from unfair competition," said Mr Karasmanis. "That's why we have given clear instructions to the competent authorities to intensify controls in order to deal promptly and effectively with any irregularities."
