"Prior to the season a higher production was expected in Peru for 2015 compared to 2014, but now it turns out that the total Peruvian harvest is a bit lower," says Ine. "Due to hail in Mexico, which affected a lot of the Flor Loca harvest blossom, and the drought in California, the harvests there will also be less than satisfactory. This means that there will be more demand from the United States for avocados from Peru, which means less will be shipped to Europe."
Mission Produce is the only company in the world that focuses completely on avocados and has production, packaging and ripening locations in California, Mexico, Peru Chile and New Zealand. Ine expects the tight market situation to last until mid May at least. "Traditionally the price in the summer months will decrease a little due to holidays and the large supply, but for now we have a shortage!"
