Peru becomes favourite for seed imports in Turkey
In Turkey hybrid seeds become the current issue every planting season, with respect to this, Israel has now been forced into the background.
Peru is Turkey’s new favourite for import hybrid seeds. According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (Turkstat), Turkey spent 109 million dollars on seed imports. Peru is first for vegetable seed imports with a value of 15.8 million dollars, China second with 13.8 million dollars, and Israel was third with 12.4 million dollars. Of the 109 million dollars spend on vegetable seed imports, half of those consisted of tomato seed purchases.

Turkey’s import of hybrid seeds in 2014 amounted to 109 million dollars, while exports amounted to 17.2 million dollars. Israel lost first place for seed exports to Peru. Turkey imported 4 thousand kilograms of seeds from Peru in 2014. Peru was first in terms of imports of vegetable seeds with 15.8 million dollars worth in 2014, China came second with 13.8 million dollars and Israel took third place with 12.4 million dollars.
Tomato seeds on top
According to foreign trade data, tomato seeds are the most important of Turkey’s vegetable seeds. Data from Turkstat indicates, that in the year 2014 Turkey imported 109 million dollars worth of vegetable seeds, half of which were tomatoes. Peru was paid 13.1 million dollars for tomato seeds, while Israel was paid 9.8 million dollars.
Turkey imports the most expensive seeds from Peru. For a kilogram of watermelon seeds from the United States 66.6 dollars is paid, from Peru 1544 dollars. From China a kilo of courgette seeds costs 5.7 dollars, from Peru 108 dollars. From China a kilo of tomato seeds costs 2.3 thousand dollars, from Peru 17.6 thousand dollars is paid. From Chile 229 dollars is paid for cucumber seeds, from Peru 3.2 thousand dollars.
Our watermelons are from Peru
Turkey imports melon, courgette, tomato, cucumber, lettuce, pepper, aubergine and potato seeds from Peru. Melon seeds take first place with 2764 kilos, following melon are tomato seeds with 742 kilos of seeds. From Peru 172 kilos of aubergine seeds, 131 kilos of cucumber seeds, 88 kilos of courgette seeds, 61 kilos of pepper seeds and 42 kilos of lettuce seeds are imported.
