Spain: Huelva, 125.5 hm3 of water for irrigation next campaign

The province of Huelva will have access to 186.6 million cubic metres of water to meet its irrigation, supply and industrial needs in the 2015-2016 campaign. This was the agreement reached at the Management Committee of the River Basin District Tinto-Odiel-Piedras, under which thirty members representing different users and sectors involved in the management of water resources are involved.

Of these 186.6 million cubic metres, 125.6 million will be intended to meet Huelva's irrigation needs. 43.5 million cubic metres will go to supply the population, while the remaining 17.5 million will be intended for industrial applications.

The meeting was attended, among others, by the general director of Infrastructure and Water Exploitation, Belén Gualda, the General Director of Planning and Public Water Management, Juan Serrato, and the territorial delegate of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, Josefa González Bayo.

Evolution of the hydrological year
During the course of the meeting, the Management Committee has also analysed both the data from the previous hydrological year (2013-2014) and the evolution of the current one. The current hydrological situation can be described as good due to the significant accumulated reserves, amounting to 948.88 million cubic metres as of 19 June, which represents 85.64% of the total capacity of Huelva's reservoirs.

For the start of the hydrological year 2015-2016, reserves are expected to stand at around 866 million cubic metres, 78% of the total storage capacity.
