"Record volume of tomatoes expected for the "Tomatina"

The traditional "Tomatina" (tomato war), held in the Spanish town of Buñol, will continue to be limited to 22,000 participants for the second year in a row (after having reached 45,000 participants in previous years). Plans, however, are for 150 tonnes of tomatoes to be used; 5 more than in the last edition.

A record that will serve to commemorate the 70th anniversary of this unique festival, which started as a joke, survived censorship, and has grown to become an international representative of festivals in Spain.
So much so that virtually all tickets made available to foreigners by the organization have already been sold.

According to figures supplied by Buñol's City Council, around 20% of this year's participants are expected to be Spanish, 15% British, 10% Japanese, 9% Indian, 5% Australian and another 5% from the United States.
