Sweden: Organic food sales up 40% in 2015

In Sweden, total organic food sales have increased by 40 percent in 2015; a trend which has also been observed at Coop Extra by store manager Daniel Klint.

"Last year, we registered a 30% increase in organic sales. Since late 2014, we have invested heavily in infrastructure for organic products, including about ten metres for dry goods, a separate fridge for fruit and vegetables and another one for organic meat," he says. One of the most popular products are organic bananas.

There are all sorts of customers interested in organic products, but the most important group are "the younger, say between 25 and 45 years. They are probably a little savvier and choose not just organic foods, but also ecological diapers, for example."

One of Coop's customers, Roland Sundgren, stands and looks at organic fruits and vegetables in their special refrigerator at Coop Extra in Pilgatan.

"I usually try to buy organic and locally produced. Nature and the environment are important to me. It's a little more expensive, but that does not matter," he says, but adding that "if there is a very large price difference, perhaps I will avoid the organic option, but I keep in mind that the more people who buy them, the cheaper they will become."
