No further Tau flies found

New Zealand lifts fruit movement restrictions

After a single male Tau fly was found in a trap on January 22, the Ministry for Primary Industries put in place restrictions on the movement of fruit and vegetables in and out of Manurewa.

The ministry has now lifted all the restrictions, as their surveillance manager Brendan Gould says no further flies were found during two weeks of trapping, fruit sampling and testing.

"I am pleased to say that the one fly found in a surveillance trap in January appears to have been a solitary traveller.

"There is no longer any need for residents and businesses in the area to be restricted in their movements of certain fruits and vegetables."

Gould says the ministry would like to thank local residents and retailers for all their support during the operation.

"This community help was vital. The Tau fly is a pest of a number of crops grown in New Zealand, both commercially and in home gardens, and we did not want it to get establish here."

The ministry will continue its routine checks for fruit flies using its nationwide network of 7600 surveillance traps.
