Greek fruit and veg exports to Romania may be in jeopardy
Greek food exports to Romania may be in jeopardy, as the Romanian Government is backing a draft law that would force major grocery stores to ensure that at least 51% of the fruits and vegetables on their shelves are of domestic origin.
Speaking to insider.gr, Mr Giorgos Polichronakis, Special Advisor to the Association of Greek Fruit, Vegetable and Juice Exporting Companies, INCOFRUIT - HELLAS, said that "this is not the first time that Romania is attempting to pass such a regulation. It was already done last year, in October, and suspended by the European Union's intervention. Such a rule, in our view, is contrary to EU law, as it does not take into account the EU regulations on the free market and free movement of goods."
Greek fruit and vegetable exports to Romania amount to about 170,000 tonnes per year. "The alarm has been sounded by the Greek authorities before any harm is caused. Because, if the law is passed, the risk for Greek exports is very high, even if the EU reacts against it."
In 2015, the export of almost all Greek fruits showed a positive development, which reinforces the trend for greater penetration of these fruits and vegetables in the Romanian market.
Specifically, according to data on the state of Greek exports published by the Finance Office and Commercial Affairs of the Greek Embassy in Bucharest, Greek exports to Romania grew by 19% in the first half of 2015, with particularly significant opportunities for the fruit, vegetable and food sector due to the reduction of the VAT from 24% to 9% from 06/01/2015.
