Zambia: Pest threatens to push tomato prices up

ZAMBIA National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) outreach manager Coillard Hamusimbi says tomato prices will continue rising if the pest, tuta absoluta, is not controlled.

Mr Hamusimbi was speaking in an interview when student farmers attending a global farmers’ master class supported by Rabobank and Zanaco visited Simango Farms in Chibombo.

He said ZNFU, in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture, farmers, tomato processors, agro-chemical companies and the Zambia Institute of Agriculture Research (ZARI) met to outline intervention measures against the pest.

Mr Hamusimbi said 15 percent of over 300,000 tomato growers are affected by the tuta absoluta pest outbreak in Kafue, Chibombo, Chisamba, Mkushi, NKANAKabwe and Lusaka West.
