Belarus: Major fruit, veg importer declared bankrupt

The Economic court of the Magilev region has started proceedings concerning the economic insolvency (bankruptcy) of the company Fruktest, one of Belarus’ biggest fruit and vegetable importers. A company called the Consulting Bureau has been appointed to carry out the procedure. Credit claims can be carried out over the course of two months and the hearing on the case has been scheduled for October 11.

Fruktest is one of the biggest importers of fruit and vegetables for the domestic market in Belarus and has a network of offices across the whole country. Via these offices, the company also sells its own products, which it produces on two farms in the Magilev district. In the Magilev region the company grows apples and in the town of Chavusy, the company grows potatoes and vegetables. Vitaly Nis and Evgeny Shamesov are named as the founders of the company.

According to data from the Ministry of the Economy for May, Fruktest was included in a register of business entities dominating the market in the trade of bananas and citrus.

Earlier the company was called Savit and Vitaly Nis was the founder of both structures. ''There was an objective reason for it. I can’t say more. But I can say it was a kind of rebranding,’’ Nis said on the change of name and legal entity.

Previously importers have said the currency crisis and the state regulation of fruit and vegetable prices has dealt a blow to the financial situation of a lot of companies.
