The second round of negotiations for the modernisation of the Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement (Global Agreement) between the EU and Mexico, which came into force on October 1, 2010, will be held in autumn this year in Mexico. From the economic point of view, the modernisation of the overall agreement aims to adapt the relations between the two regions to the new trade and investment realities.
The first round of negotiations between the EU and Mexico were held in Brussels on June 13 and 14. This first meeting between the parties focused on the methods of work organisation and on the content of the new agreement.
According to the Information Bulletin ICEX, Spain has supported this process from the outset.
The development of Spanish fruit and vegetable exports to Mexico has been negative in recent years - down from 1,084 tons in 2010 to 12 tons in 2015. The export value in 2010 amounted to 840,740 euro and in 2015 to 81.4134 euro.
In the first quarter of 2016, exports of fresh fruits and vegetables to Mexico were practically nil, as they amounted to just 7 tons, worth 51.202 euros, according to data from Customs.
FEPEX expects there will be a slight recovery of exports, especially of plums, starting this week, thanks to Extremadura's new stone fruit export programme, which the Association of Fruit Growers of Extremadura, Afruex, will pay for. The Mexican inspector responsible for controlling said exports will start inspecting the first shipments in Extremadura today.
