The governor of the state of Guanajuato, Miguel Marquez Marquez, recently opened a cooling plant for berries, which will allow producers in the area to store and preserve fruits and vegetables in their natural state.
This plant will directly benefit 39 farmers, 6 agricultural industries and more than 40 providers. It controls the humidity and temperature of the fruit, which will allow berry producers from Guanajuato to increase their crops, said the state governor.
Marquez Marquez acknowledged the leadership of Mr. Javier Usabiaga Arroyo which, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SDAyR), had allowed the fields Guanajuato to become a national and international reference. He added that the plant was the result of the joint efforts by three levels of government and that producers from 27 municipalities in Guanajuato were currently planting 1,000 hectares of strawberry.
The harvest amounts to nearly 60,000 tons, 24,000 tons of which are exported.
According to estimates, approximately 350 producers are planting 1,960 hectares of some kind of berry (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and blueberry) in this 2016-2017 cycle.
"This new berry cooling plant is so important because the market is demanding these products."
More than 24 million pesos were invested in the cooling rooms. The berry cooling plant can cool up to 9.5 tons per hour, i.e., 2,500 boxes of strawberries.
