Greece: 16.9% increase in value of fruit and veg exports
An increase of 31.1% in volume, reaching 1,194,180 tonnes, and of 16.9% in value, to 680.975 million Euro, has been achieved by Greek fresh fruit and vegetable exports during the first eight months of 2016, compared with the same period of 2015.
These figures are based on the latest ELSTAT data, processed by Incofruit Hellas. Specifically, in these eight months, fruit exports have grown by 31.9% in volume and 17.4% in value, reaching 1,031,344 tonnes, worth 561.63 million Euro.
Similarly, vegetable exports grew by 26.1% in volume compared with the same period of 2015, totalling 162,837 tonnes, and by 14.5% in value, reaching 119.345 million Euro.
The most noteworthy growth in terms of volume compared to the same period of 2015 was recorded by mandarins (+103.3%), oranges (+82.7%), stonefruit (+23.4%; +23.5% for peaches, +9.7% for nectarines, +61.4% for apricots, -41.5% for cherries and +460% for plums), apples (+20.6%) and strawberries (+12.6%).
As for vegetables, the biggest growth was recorded by cucumbers, with a 32.1% increase in volume, and tomatoes, with 20.2%.
Despite some stagnation in the production volume of fruits and vegetables, Greece has managed to dramatically increase its exports over the last decade (from 1,027,568 tonnes and 718.847 million Euro in 2007 to 1,361,223 tonnes and 936.800 million Euro in 2015.
