Although the cultivation and marketing of raspberry and blueberry have had extraordinary growth in San Quintin, the production of these berries won't increase anymore, despite international demand, said Manuel Valladolid Seamanduras, head of the Ministry of Agricultural Development (Sefoa) of Baja California.
This is because of the lack of water in the southern region of the municipality, he said, a problem that could be solved once the beach wells start operating; their authorization is about to be published.
"Last year, the marketing of blueberries generated 232 million pesos, when that product had only generated revenues for the southern region of 15 million pesos in 2011. Meanwhile, raspberry sales went from 274 million pesos in 2011 to 1,084 million pesos in 2015," he said.
He stressed that both products also generate skilled labor that was better paid than other crops, so the economic benefits were not only obtained in the marketing and export of this product, but it also benefited the regional economy, particularly San Quintin.
