Mexico: Guanajuato wants to be a leading producer of cucumbers
Guanajuato, is seeking to position itself among the leading producers of cucumbers, even though it produced 33.595 tons of this vegetable in 2015. According to the 2016 Agricultural food Atlas of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), the state had a 22.5% variation between 2014 and 2015.The main producer in Guanajuato is Valle de Santiago, with a total of 25,000 tons; followed by Penjamo, with 1,872 tons, and Salamanca, with 1,000 tons.
Strong growth
In 2012, the state's harvest only amounted to 7,710 tons. In 2013 there was a rebound and the state produced 26,572 tons of cucumber, 21,000 tons of which were harvested in the municipality of Valle de Santiago. By 2014, Guanajuato had produced 27,435 tons.
Ranking
The state leading the list, is Sinaloa, with a volume of 359,910 tons of cucumber. They produced four out of every 10 tons of Mexican cucumbers.
The state of Mexico City ranks second, with a total of 160,000 units; followed by the State of Mexico, with only 74,000, and Jalisco, with 72,000.
