Lucien de Wit, Luba Fresh:

“Anticipation on grape market”

The grape market is currently characterised by an anticipation. “Last week Monday, the first boat arrived from Namibia, and we started with high prices from 3.50 to 3.75 euro per kilogram. The start of the Namibian grape season was very good. Many grapes were sold, in part because they arrived on an empty market. Now that more boats have been unloaded, we will have to wait and see what the correct prices will be to finish the programmes,” says Lucien de Wit from Luba Fresh.

“Plenty of grapes are arriving, but the market is still anticipatory. The Italian grape season is as good as finished. Peru is on the market as well, and white grapes show a decreasing price because of that. The Red Globe grapes from Peru, on the other hand, are a bit firmer in price.”

“Orange River is now completely in production, and we will expect the first South African grapes from Berg River and Paarl from week 2. The grapes are very good quality this year, and volumes are also good, but the market still has to settle a bit. As a consequence of the Brexit, the UK has not yet secured large grape volumes. All in all, we are facing challenging weeks, but large programmes have already closed before the start of 2017, so we should be all right,” De Wit concludes.
