Greece: Around 200% price increases for some crops
Cauliflower is as expensive as chicken and broccoli is at the same price level as pork. The reason, according to traders, is the impact of frosts, which have damaged the crop, causing shortages and giving a push to commodity prices.
A storm swept through thousands of hectares of fruit and vegetables, mainly in Attica, Euboea, Magnesia and Ilia.
Prices on some products have more than doubled, as revealed by data of the Central Purchasing Agency.
Lettuce prices have shot up from 25 cents to 80 cents; a 220% increase. Spinach has gone from 55 cents to 1.80 Euro. Cauliflower has reached 1.3 Euro per kilo, which is a 160% increase, and broccoli has been sold for an average 2.3 Euro per kilo, up by 190% compared to last year.
Many crops have been covered by snow, so the harvest has ground to a halt.
The actual extent of the damage has yet to be assessed, according to the producers, who fear that major shortages will affect many fruits and vegetables.
