Spain: The Smith pomegranate, a protected variety
The Smith is a pomegranate variety discovered in Visalia and registered by Gregory Smith. Seeing the opportunity, BIOGOLD EM did not hesitate to work with it and market it under the brand "Smith Pomegranate". Thus, according to Pedro Pérez, commercial director of the company, "we helped the variety's producers and marketers by turning it into a differentiated brand."
Biogold started with "Smith Pomegranates" in 2008 and has been expanding its commercial network to countries like Morocco, Italy, Egypt and Portugal. Over the last 2 years, a great investment has been made in marketing, as they have focused on creating a solid brand. Pérez states that "in addition to the licences, we provide assistance throughout the entire production chain in order to improve the product's added value. This is done with help from agricultural technicians, who provide advice not only in the production process, but also in finding contacts and trade routes."
The main features of Smith pomegranates are their intense red colour, both on the outside and inside, their much earlier ripening compared to other varieties and the fact that it is a much more productive crop.
