Helien Verhagen, East4Fresh / Color2Food:

"A lot of interest in Ready-to-Drink coconuts"

In recent years coconut water has become increasingly popular. It is tasty, fresh and turns out to be very healthy. One problem: if you want really fresh coconut water - and not processed stuff in a carton - it is a struggle to crack open the entire coconut. East4Fresh / Colour2Food has a solution to this and with the help of a special cutting technique it is now possible to open the young coconut with your fingers rather than a machete. "Pop a straw in and sip away," says Helien Verhagen.

The young coconuts that East4Fresh / Color2Food imports are cut with a special technique in their country of origin, Vietnam, so that they are easier to open. The concept has interested supermarket chains at home and abroad.

"They saw the young coconuts as a difficult product at first, but will absorb it into their assortment happily in this form. Jumbo has already stepped up and we supply the coconuts to German supermarkets too," says Helien. "There is particular interest in the coconut water. At Jumbo the coconuts are between the chilled juices on the shelves."

East4Fresh / Color2Food imports the young coconuts from Vietnam all year round. She sees the popularity of the coconut water increasing for now. "The flavour of the coconut water from Vietnam is sweeter compared to the coconut water from Thailand. Coconut water was always popular with vegetarians due to the vitamins and minerals in it, but now that we can offer coconuts 'ready-to-drink', these exotics have become accessible for a much wider audience," concludes Helien.
