Egypt: Sweet potatoes start the season 0.10 euro per kilo more expensive
There are several factors that have influenced this increase, but it is worth highlighting the increase in the price of oil, as well as the devaluation of the Egyptian currency. "Today, a kilo of premium quality sweet potato is being paid at 0.90 euro in the fields," said Waleed Tantawy, the executive director of the Green Valley Import and Export company.
However, this trend could be reversed next year as "we are changing the way we grow sweet potatoes, which will lead to an increase in production in the coming years," stated Tantawy. This product might not be the most popular product, but it does have good acceptance in the international market.
Destinations, such as the Netherlands, England, France or Germany, look for sweet potatoes of Egyptian origin. "The Netherlands is our main market."
Green Valley Import and Export produces an average of 10,000 tons of sweet potatoes per year, 70% of which is exported to the above-mentioned countries. 1,500 tons of the 3,000 that remain for local consumption are sent to food and canning factories.
