Dimitis Lagios, Q AgroCULTURE SA:

"Greece: "We export 45 million kilos of peaches to the rest of Europe"

Peaches are one of the most cultivated fruits in Greece and have a notable presence on the European continent. "In our case, we export to different markets with different peculiarities," explains Lagios. In fact, this Greek company ships its peaches to Poland, its main market; India, where they are transported by plane; the area of the Balkans; Lithuania; Moldova and Italy. "There's a steady flow of 3 to 4 trucks a week until the end of the season." However, they also leave part of the production for Greece, as this fruit is distributed among various hotel chains in the country, as well as by stores.

On the international scene, Spain is the main competitor for Greek producers and marketers, as the Spanish production volume is considerable, making it easier for them to reach more markets. "We know they are present and that they are strong in stonefruit in general, but we are confident that we can achieve a lot with our varieties."

As for prices, "it depends a lot on the situation or moment of the campaign, as well as on the market the fruit is intended for," clarifies Lagios. The cost of the chosen means of transport, as well as the packaging that the client requests, can cause prices to show large variations. "What we can say is that the starting price at origin ranges between 0.55 and 0.60 Euro per kilo at the moment."

"Our main goal is to keep prices at reasonable levels depending on the product and service offered; we want the producers to feel motivated, as the rest of the chain depends on them," adds the Greek entrepreneur.
