Demand exceeds supplies for new BBQ-bloomer onion product
Onions might be a product that is often taken for granted on supermarket shelves, but for many families, growing them is their life and involves their heart and soul. One family farm based in Nevada has seen their business enjoy steady growth while being committed to sustainable practices.
Peri & Sons Farms have seen their business expand from Nevada into California and have grown new varieties of onions that appear to be popular among their customers. Teri Gibson, of Peri & Sons, talks about the farm's annual production, "Peri & Sons Farms grows, packs and ships premium white, yellow, red, sweet and organic onions. Our farms in Nevada and California annually produce over 400 million pounds of onions; sold across the nation through our 'Onions All Year' program since 1980."
New product receiving positive feedback
Peri & Sons Farms continues to innovate and have come up with a new product - the BBQ Bloomer. The company claims that this variety is a low-fat alternative to the typical deep-fried onion in that it is grilled with olive oil and spices and not deep-fried. The product is generally available from May through August and has almost sold out for the season. Gibson says they will be looking to increase production of this variety to meet demand. "We grow a super colossal sweet yellow onion for this program. Growing onions to that spec can be tricky, so we encourage our customers to commit to the program early so we can gauge production and they can be better assured of the best size and quality. Based on response this year, we’ll definitely look to cultivate more next year."
Sustainably grown
While their business has expanded to a large scale, the company says they are committed to continue producing onions sustainably and without GMO. Gibson continues, "Peri & Sons Farms is the first recipient of SCS Global’s Sustainably Grown certification for domestic onions. Our dedication to being Non-GMO, USDA Certified Organic, Sustainably Grown and to Food Safety has earned us the GFSI/GlobalGAP certification ─ a level of certification not many farms are able to achieve."
