Guatemala cantaloupe shipments to US begin next week
Vision Produce are commencing imports of cantaloupes from Guatemala next week. The first shipment will arrive in California in a week and are expected to continue through to April. Growing conditions have been favorable in the region and the location of production has enabled the cantaloupes to avoid any weather or insect impacts.
"The first containers of cantaloupes from our grower in Guatemala will arrive at Port Hueneme, California next week," said Donald Souther, of Vision Produce Company. "Our production will run from December 15th until April 2018, depending on weather conditions. The weather this Fall has been excellent which has produced exceptional fruit. Our grower is privileged to grow at a slightly higher elevation which tends to protect from many detrimental conditions."
Demand steady with help from foodservice and processing
Cantaloupes typically enjoy higher demand during the summer months, when they are more readily available. However, Souther said that demand has maintained its strength towards the end of the year, particularly in the foodservice and processing sectors.
"Demand tends to be steady as Christmas approaches," he said. "Foodservice and processing have helped to maintain volume outside of the higher demand summer months."
Partnership with Del Lago and growth in category
Vision Produce are bringing the cantaloupes in under the Del Lago label and the company is pleased with the quality of fruit received under this arrangement. "We are continuing our partnership with the Del Lago label of cantaloupes," said Souther. "They have a reputation for producing unprecedented quality and flavor."
"Vision Produce Company is continuing to grow their melon category," he added. "In addition to their offshore cantaloupe deal, we have Honey Dew and Watermelon availability throughout the year."
