Peru: Fruit exports surpass the 2 billion dollar mark

The Association of Exporters (ADEX) stated that Peruvian fruit exports in all their presentations (fresh, frozen, canned, and dried) between January and November 2017 amounted to US $ 2.025 billion, i.e. 20% more than in the same period of 2016. The increase was driven by the growth of avocados (+43%), the obtaining of phytosanitary protocols, and the increase of hectares for the production of the avocado and blueberry.

The manager of Agricultural exports of the guild, Paula Carrion Tello, said that fresh fruit exports accounted for 89.2% of total exports, but that exports of frozen, canned and dried fruits also stood out.

She said that exports were led by avocados (US $ 612 million 225 thousand) and grapes (US $ 394 million 680 thousand), which together accounted for 49% of shipments. "It's worth noting that this campaign's shipments of grape just started a couple of months ago, so they are not reflected in this statistics," Carrion added.

Carrion also spoke about the importance of promoting the continuity of investments in the sector, which requires extending the validity of the Agrarian Promotion Law N° 27360, as well as promoting the participation of the main actors of the agricultural export chain in different events linked to the sector.

Since one of the goals of the exporter guild is to provide expert information about new trends in the marketing of products, developments, and projections for the sector, the guild will hold the 19th Agricultural Exports Lunch.

The institution will also hold the I Forum of the Sustainable Development of Achiote, the II Forum for the Strengthening of the cochineal chain, the X Expoalimentaria fair, the Convention of Natural Products, the Convention of Sustainable Products, the International Convention of Markets and Trends, and the IX International Convention of Capsicum.

Data
Blueberry (16%), mango (11%), and tangerine (8%) exports stood out thanks to the share they achieved. Total shipments of avocado, blueberry, tangerine, and pomegranate registered variations of over 30%. Meanwhile, grape, banana, and strawberry exports declined.

Peruvian fruits reached 85 destinations. The main destinations were the United States (US $ 645,462,000,000) and the Netherlands (US $ 509,910,000,000), which together account for 57% of exports. They are followed by the United Kingdom, Spain, China, Hong Kong, and Canada.
