First Magic Star apples now available to a limited extent in Belgium
The first harvest of a new apple variety, Magic Star, is available from OKay and OKay Compact in Belgium as of 14 February. This regards a fairly small harvest of about 15 tonnes, in part because the planting of new apple trees is spread over three years and, in part, because of the less favourable weather conditions of last spring.
Magic Star was exclusively developed for Colruyt by Dutch fruit agriculturalists Fresh Forward. The new variety is grown in Belgium by our permanent partners Neven Fruits Waremme, Wolfcarius Markegem, and Gebroeders Bangels Gingelom. Above all, the apple is tuned to the expectations of consumers, and it was selected after tasting sessions with our customers. We also want to support the skill of our local growers with the launch of Magic Star. Because it concerns a new product with a high value added, we can guarantee our growers a correct price for the entire harvest.
In 2019, Magic Star will be launched nationally. In the autumn of 2017, the same growers also planted the first trees of the Coryphée variety, which has been exclusively developed for Colruyt as well.
