Cuba: Good potato campaign in Ciego de Avila
The farmers of Ciego de Ávila collect an average of 450 tons of potatoes daily, which is then distributed to the state agricultural markets in the 10 municipalities of the province.
The workers of the Food Collection, Distribution, and Marketing Company use more than 40 trucks each day, a lower number than what was forecast, as the winter season also includes the harvest of tomatoes and other much-needed vegetables.
According to Orlando Perez Padreira, territorial delegate of Agriculture, this season's production parameters have been better than in the previous season thanks to the efficiency in irrigation and the good yields of the national and imported seeds used this season.
Perez Pedreira said the harvest would finish at the end of April and that they expect to harvest more than 17,000 tons of this product, which will be distributed among the population and the industry.
The companies La Cuba, Arnaldo Ramirez, El Mambi, Cubasoy, and the cooperatives of agricultural production Revolucion de Octubre, Paquito Gonzalez, and 26 de Julio, planted a total of 852 hectares with six different varieties of the tuber.
Frank Guemes, an official of the National Association of Small Farmers, told the Cuban News Agency that the three groups of producers were planning to close April with a yield of 20 tons or more of potatoes per hectare.
