Mohamed Shaaban, manager of the Egyptian import-export company Garlico Company, joined the garlic business seven years ago. “I found some Egyptian partners who owned big production surfaces. We wanted to create a proper competition in the sector, especially for Chinese, Spanish and Argentinian garlic.” Annually the company produces 3,000 tons. Mohamed: “We have several packing and processing stations where we can process up to 100 tons of garlic each day.”

“All our garlic is grown in Upper Egypt, where we have our own lands, processing stations, farms and homes. We can easily control the quality of our products.” According to Mohamed, Egyptian garlic has several advantages. “Egyptian garlic is spicier than for example Chinese garlic. Also, it contains a lot of oil and is free from pesticides and soil residues. It is also suitable for the manufacturing of medicines.”

Garlico Company exports to countries worldwide. Mohammed: “We export to Brazil, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Pakistan , Russia, Sweden, and Arabian countries like Dubai, Oman, Saudi Arabia and others. This year we also have huge demands from America, Canada, Malaysia and Vietnam.” Mohamed is looking for new clients in these countries, as he is in Poland and Australia.
The products of Garlico Company are not all exported. A lot of it is sold on the Egyptian market. “Garlic is one of the main products in the Egyptian kitchen. It is used for a lot of our meals.”

Garlico Company has a broad product range. Mohammed: “However, the garlic business is much better than the business for other agricultural products. When we get one order for tomatoes, potatoes or fruit we get ten orders for garlic in the same time.”
Yellow and red onions
Other successful products offered by the company are the yellow and red Egyptian onions. “They are of a high quality and are very popular all over the world.”
Mohamed together with other Egyptian traders
Mohamed has high expectations for this season. “We can offer a competitive quality and the prices are much more better than last year. We already have huge demands from Canada, Australia, Brazil, Pakistan and Europe.” Mohamed offers purple and white garlic. The white garlic has around 20-25 cloves per piece. Purple garlic contains 8-12 cloves, which are much bigger. “The purple garlic is more expensive. We offer the garlic in different classes and add extra weight to our packages in case of weight loss during the shipping process.”
